How does a heads-up display work?

The reason a heads-up display is becoming so popular in car models is that it prevents the driver from getting distracted while driving and provides guidance. Navigation data is available on the dash screens inside the cars but drivers need to lower their heads to look at the information. This can cause accidents because the driver needs to take his eyes off the road. A heads-up display is the perfect solution for this problem.

Mechanism behind the heads-up display

The heads-up display is a transparent display of information on the windshield of the car. This data is reflected directly in the visual field of the driver so that the driver does not need to turn his head at all.

The HUD system has components like projector unit, combiner and a computer that generates a video of the information. The HUD system works in two different ways.

The first type of HUD system makes use of transparent phosphors which are embedded in a small section of the windshield to display information with the help of projected laser beams.

The second type of HUD system makes use of a reflective mirror section once again on the windshield. A light which is embedded in the dash of the car is reflected onto this mirror and in turn on the windshield. It displays the information such as navigation, speed, tachometer as well as night vision in some cases.

Current status of the heads-up display system

The rapid development of automation technology has brought forth the latest version of the heads-up display system. Augmented reality or AR is soon going to be used to display information on any surface. The information from the car’s GPS system, your phone’s internet and mobile applications will be displayed onto the windshield so that it will become a viewing screen.

Benefits of Head-up displays

Latest HUD systems are integrated with infrared cameras that can detect any object in the vicinity if your visibility is affected by the darkness or fog. These objects can be projected on your windscreen in the same position as in real life. This can help you to avoid collisions or accidents.

The HUD can also guide you regarding the best route (real time!) so that you can reach your destination safely and on time.

If you don’t already have HUD in your car, think about when the time comes to purchase a new vehicle.  It takes a little getting used to but one you have it, I think you’ll see the benefits.
