How Are Windshields Even Made?
Windshields are made through a process called glass manufacturing or glass forming. The basic steps include:
1. Mixing raw materials like silica sand, soda ash, and cullet.
2. Melting the mixture in a furnace.
3. Pouring the molten glass onto a bed of molten tin, creating a continuous ribbon.
4. Cooling and solidifying the glass on the tin surface.
5. Cutting the cooled glass into large sheets and further shaping them into windshield size.
6. Heating and bending the glass to achieve the desired curvature.
7. Tempering the glass by rapid cooling to increase strength and shatter resistance.
8. Adding additional layers, such as a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) layer for laminated windshields.
9. Conducting quality control checks to ensure safety and specifications.
10. Installing the windshields in vehicles using adhesives and seals.
