The Right Windshield Wiper Fluid for Winter
As winter continues to crawl near, it’s not just you who needs a change of clothes, but your car will need a different set of fluids in it as well. The idea is to make sure your car remains warm and in working condition – your windshield being no exception.
We recently discussed how the cold can turn small scratches [KH1] and dings into large cracks. Today, we’ll discuss how you can choose the right wiper fluid to make sure your windshield remains clear and brings out its true condition during the winter.
Choosing the Right Winter Wiper Fluid
Winter windshield wiper fluid has a higher methyl alcohol concentration, thus reducing its freezing point and not just making sure your windshield remains clear, but also that the fluid doesn’t freeze overnight. The low freezing point also means that the winter wiper fluid can effectively help you melt thin layers of ice on your windshield that you’d normally find after work.
When making a decision, always check the label on the back where its lowest temperature is listed. Choose a product with a freezing point below what your area usually experiences.
Since the fluid prevents your windshield from freezing over, it also reduces the risk of your windshield cracking due to the weather. However, keep in mind that this is the case only with windshields that are in pristine condition.
If there are cracks already, the fluid might not be able to do much to protect it.
